What's Your "Zoom" Voice? (Why the TONE of your voice matters the MOST on Zoom)

Love it or hate it – Zoom life is here to stay…at least for a while longer!

The other day I asked my husband if he noticed that he uses a different voice whenever he turns on his webcam for a meeting on Zoom.

His pitch drops a note, making him sound like he means business.

Plus, he clips the ends of his words a bit more too in a very matter-of-fact kind of way.

I call this his “Zoom Teacher Voice”.

Granted, he teaches high school Geography, including climate change, geopolitics, globalisation, urbanisation…all very serious topics!

Compare this tone of voice to when he’s telling a bedtime story to our 7 and 5 year olds…

Or when he’s trying to ask his wife whether he can go out for Whiskey night with the boys…

Well, let’s just say, the way his voice sounds reveals a totally different side of him and has a different effect.

But really, don’t we all do this?

Whether we realise it or not, our tone of voice tells our listeners A LOT more about who we are, what we’re feeling and what we want..…and it does so even MORE clearly than the WORDS we’re actually using.

My questions to you are:

1. Do you have a Zoom Voice?

2. Do you know what your voice sounds like over Zoom (or FaceTime or whatever virtual conference platform you use regularly)?

3. Did you know that your TONE of voice is THE MOST important tool we have for communicating effectively over Zoom?

The last question is what this post is all about.

In my latest video, I share 5 ways that Zoom puts us at a disadvantage and impacts how well we communicate with others online.

I also share one thing you can do right now to help make sure your listeners hear what you REALLY mean to say.

I hope you realise how powerful your voice TRULY is.

Whether you want to use your voice to sing a great song, tell a riveting story or deliver a powerful presentation, you have it in you to make a big impact.

May 2021 bring you PLENTY of opportunities to do great things with your voice!
